The primary goal of the work is to design a revolutionary electronically steerable beam antenna operating between 300 GHz and 1 THz that is based upon superconducting nanoelectronics suitable for astronomical applications. The project will be theoretical in character as it involves the design and simulation of the final antenna design as well as the design of the quasioptical system for proper operation at the ASTE telescope in Chile. Intermediate design studies will be also required for development of experiments that prove the correct operation of all the subsystems. The position will be located in the THz Sensing Group at the Delft University of Technology and is supervised by Dr. Jochem Baselmans from SRON and Dr. Nuia Llombart from the Delft University. You will work in close collaboration with another Ph.D. student in the same group who will be end responsible for the experiments. It is envisioned that at the end of the project you will be involved in the integration of the antenna with an onchip spectrometer and participate in the testing of the full instrument in the telescope. The work is part of the ERC project MOSAIC, which intends to develop a fully novel type of integral field spectrograph for submm astronomy from the ground and in space. The antenna is a key technological development of this project. SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The research area of the Astrophysics group focuses on observational studies of topicsobjects for which the understanding depends critically on the infrared to submm wavelength radiation. Among the most recent instrumental track records are the HIFI instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory, for which SRON is the Principal Investigator institute. SRON is also the PIinstitute for the SAFARI instrument on the Japanese SPICA satellite. The Astrophysics group of SRON Groningen has a vacancy for an PhD student fm vacancy nr. 1159 Project description The PhD student fm will work on the cosmic starformation history and its connection with the accretion history of supermassive black holes. The primary datasets will be the imaging data at farinfraredsubmillimetre wavelengths from two of ESAs flagship missions Herschel and Planck, complemented by galaxy surveys carried out at other wavelengths. The PhD student fm will focus on measuring the total starformation rates of different galaxy populations, their connection with the underlying dark matter distribution, and evolutionary history through cosmic time. To probe the coevolution between star formation and black hole feedback, the PhD student fm will study star formation in galaxies which host actively growing black holes at different cosmic epochs. The student fm will also make comparisons with predictions from theoretical models to constrain physical processes regulating galaxy formation and evolution. A PhD scholarship in observational studies of the infrared Universe is available at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research commencing Fall 2015. The principal supervisor is Dr. Lingyu Wang. The PhD student fm will also work with other members of SRON and the University of Groningen, as well as other international collaborators. Applicants must have a M.Sc. or equivalent.
