Apple reduces orders for iPhone 5 components - report

(Telecompaper) Apple has cut its orders for components for the iPhone 5 due to weaker-than-expected demand, people familiar with the situation told the Wall Street Journal. Apple's orders for iPhone 5 screens for the first quarter have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order, two of the people said. The company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people. Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month, the report said.Japan's Nikkei also reports that Japan Display and Sharp have started reducing production of smartphone LCD panels for Apple amid slower-than-anticipated global sales of the iPhone 5. LG Display is the other main supplier of LCD panels for the iPhone 5, which debuted last September. Apple had planned to order from the trio enough panels for a total 65 million units this quarter. But now, the US firm is believed to have notified them to roughly halve that figure.
