Radeon R9-290X: Hardware specs and benchmarks of AMDs Titan killer leaked

2013-09-25 00:02:21| Extremetech

Ahead of AMD's official unveil of the Hawaii line of GPUs, details, photos, and benchmarks of (probably) the Radeon R9-290X have leaked. The photos and benchmarks seem to confirm that the Hawaii XT (GCN 2.0) R9-290X has 2816 stream processors, split among 44 clusters. The leaked benchmarks peg the Radeon R9-290X as equal or slightly faster than Nvidia's GTX Titan, and around 10% faster than the GTX 780 -- strong, and if it's priced right, it could put AMD back in the driving seat.

AMDs future APU and GPU code names revealed, analyzed

2013-06-25 19:59:19| Extremetech

A few days ago, AMD released its latest Catalyst beta graphics driver -- and hidden within, AMD has helpfully provided a long list of new GPU and APU code names that the driver is compatible with, and provided a little more background on the highly anticipated Kaveri desktop APU. The successor to the Kabini and Temash mobile APUs will be called Mullins. On the desktop, discrete GPU front, we now know that there will be an 8000-series (Sea Islands) GPU called Tonga, and that the 9000-series (Volcanic Islands) will feature Hawaii and Vesuvius GPUs.

AMDs Kyoto: Kabini gives AMD the advantage over Intel in low-power servers for now

2013-05-29 13:06:33| Extremetech

AMD's new low-power Kabini APU is making a play for cloud computing and server workloads as well. The new Kyoto Opteron will be the first server APU AMD has ever built, and is aimed at low-power cloud workloads that could benefit from OpenCL acceleration.
