EEOC updates pregnancy discrimination guidance

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued an update of its enforcement guidance on pregnancy discrimination that is based on the U.S. Supreme Court's March ruling in Peggy Young v. United Parcel Service Inc. That ruling revived a part-time worker's pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against UPS, in which she had charged that the Atlanta-based package delivery company had acted unlawfully in refusing to accommodate her lifting restriction while it had accommodated other drivers who were unable to work for other reasons.

Abercrombie settles discrimination claim with Justice Department

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday said it had reached an agreement with clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch on a discrimination claim involving the immigration status of a non-U.S. citizen. The department said Ohio-based Abercrombie had required a woman to present documentation to verify her eligibility for employment in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

A D.C. man who claims he was mocked and set up for false arrest by employees of the Foggy Bottom Whole Foods Market has earned a big procedural win in his lawsuit against the store's parent company. Randy Brown , an African-American man who suffers a "cognitive disability due to traumatic brain injury," sued Whole Foods Market Group Inc. in February 2013, arguing his alleged mistreatment amounted to discrimination based on his disability and race.

Federal law currently prohibits employers from firing, refusing to hire or otherwise discriminating against pregnant women.
