Dominion Virginia Power will close all of the ash ponds at its Virginia power stations in compliance with standards established by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency's Coal Combustion Residuals rules. The company will close ponds at four locations in Virginia: Bremo Power Station in Fluvanna County, Chesapeake Energy Center in Chesapeake, Chesterfield Power Station in Chesterfield County, and Possum Point Power Station in Prince William County.

Virginia's largest utility said Friday's announcement is in response to so-called coal combustion residuals rules established by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The closures will occur at Bremo Power Station in Fluvanna County, Chesapeake Energy Center in Chesapeake, Chesterfield Power Station in Chesterfield County, and Possum Point Power Station in Prince William County.

Power district converting coal plant unit to use hydrogen

Nebraska Public Power District says it will be converting a unit at one of its coal-fired power plants to burn cleaner-burning hydrogen instead. The district announced at a news conference Friday at its Sheldon Station near Hallam in southeast Nebraska that the hydrogen would be acquired from a new carbon black plant planned for construction nearby.

CSX now says that the railroad won't deliver the double-digit profit growth it promised this year because coal demand remains weak. Executives remain optimistic about the railroad's prospects because service is improving, but they said Wednesday, a day after posting first-quarter earnings, that mid-to-high single-digit profit growth is likely in 2015.
