Reuters: Hundreds of people in China's southern Guangdong province protested against the expansion of a coal-fired power plant on Sunday, state media reported, the latest sign of public discontent over pollution. Residents had complained of smog in Heyuan city since the power plant there began operations in 2008, and officials recently approved a second phase for the project, the official Xinhua news agency reported. U.S. carbon emissions falling to two-decade low in coal shift
2015-04-11 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: Carbon dioxide emissions will slip to the lowest since 1994 as U.S. utilities shift away from coal in favor of solar, wind and natural gas. The power grid will add a record amount of solar energy as coal plants idle in response to cheap gas and tighter environmental regulations, according to a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance released Thursday. As a result of the shift, emissions blamed for global warming from power generation will fall 15 percent below 2005 levels. Developers will install...

Coal Power Plant Closings To Spur Large CO2 Cut in U.S. in 2015

Yale Environment 360: Thanks to the closing of a record number of coal-fired power plants, emissions from the U.S. power sector in 2015 are expected to fall 15 percent below 2005 levels, according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The report said that seven percent of the U.S.s coal-fired power capacity will be shut down this year, and that on the basis of emissions per-unit-of-power-generated, 2015 will be the cleanest year in more than 60 years. The loss of coal-fired power is being made up by cleaner...
US carbon pollution set for 2015 drop as coal plants close

RTCC: US efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions look set for a huge boost this year, with carbon pollution from the power sector set to fall to its lowest level since 1994. Record numbers of US coal-fired power plants are set to close this year, and analysts at Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) say this will likely see power sector emissions drop 15.4% below 2005 levels. Research published today indicates 23GW, 7% of US coal capacity, will come offline due to a combination of low gas prices, new mercury...

2015-04-09 17:17:27| Energy - Topix.net
Duke Energy Corp. says a $25 million fine by North Carolina environmental regulators over coal ash pollution that has been seeping into groundwater for years is excessive and unnecessary. The country's largest electric company said Thursday it appealed the penalty announced last month over ongoing contamination at the retired Sutton electric plant outside Wilmington.
