Duke Energy, Virginia agree to $2.5 million coal ash settlement

Duke Energy has agreed to a $2.5 million settlement with Virginia over a massive coal ash spill that coated 70 miles of the Dan River in gray sludge, state environmental officials announced Friday. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality said the settlement would include $2.25 million in environmental projects that Duke would perform in communities affected by the spill in February 2014.

Columbia coal terminal gets water-quality OK

Oregon environmental regulators have ruled that a proposed coal export terminal on the Columbia River meets state and federal water-quality standards, but the project still faces an adverse ruling from another state agency and questions about its economics in a slumping coal market. The state Department of Environmental Quality issued a water-quality certification Tuesday to the proposed Coyote Island Terminal at Boardman.

Grist: The worlds first clean coal plant that is, the first full-size coal-fired power plant ever to capture and store the majority of its CO2 emissions is located in, of all places, Saskatchewan. (They should change the name to Of All Places, Saskatchewan.)
