EcoWatch: As my colleague Mary Anne Hitt noted in her highlights of 2014 column weve had some significant victories in the fight against the destruction of mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia over the past year. But there is still so much to be done to stop this horrible practice from devastating our communities, our health and our wild Appalachian places. Sydney Morning Herald: The viability of mining Australia's massive fossil fuel reserves has been called into question by new research that estimates the limits of carbon emissions possible if dangerous climate change is to be avoided. In a study published in the journal Nature, University College London researchers say that 82 per cent of the world's coal, half its gas reserves and a third of its oil must remain in the ground if global temperature increases are to be kept within 2 degrees of pre-industrial levels. ...

Chinese coal demand fell in 2014

RTCC: Coal demand in China dropped by around 2.3% in the first eleven months of 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, government figures show. Production of coal in China declined by 2.1% and imports fell 9.0%. Meanwhile, Chinas economy and production of electricity continued to grow. EPA delays regulations on cutting carbon at coal power plants

2015-01-08 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: The Obama administration on Wednesday said it would delay for months a final rule to control carbon dioxide emissions at new coal-fired power plants, thwarting for now one way the Republican-controlled Congress could have blocked the administration's plans on global warming. A final rule was due by law on Jan. 8, a year after it was first proposed. But the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday it would wait until midsummer, and issue the new power plant rules with a separate regulation...
