Reuters: China will slash coal consumption by more than 80 million tonnes by 2017 as part of efforts to reduce air pollution, according to an action plan released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Friday. Coal consumption will be reduced by more than 160 million tonnes by 2020, according to the plan.

CSX domestic coal shipments down; oil spill could hurt earnings

CSX Corp. domestic coal shipments are expected to decline at least 5 percent this year, making it more difficult for the company to reach its goals, CSX Chief Financial Officer Fredrik Eliasson said in a statement before his appearance at the JP Morgan Aviation, Transportation and Industrials Conference in New York City. Coal shipments make up a major part of CSX's business, representing 18 percent of total volume and 22 percent of revenue in 2014.

Montana coal seam fire is out after smoldering for decades

Bill Snoddy with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality says the Settler's Stripping Coal Fire is out and reclamation work on the Treasure County site is underway. The Great Falls Tribune reports that Snoddy said the fire burned for as long as 70 years after a lightning strike hit an exposed section of the 15-foot-thick seam.
