2015-11-12 12:06:06| Grocery - Topix.net
BHP Billiton is disputing an A$288 million coal royalty bill from Australia's Queensland state, stemming from how it measures the value of coal, it said on Thursday. BHP Billiton has long defended a policy of calculating its royalty payments based on the first sale of the coal to its BMAG marketing hub in Singapore, where it pays lower corporate tax.

One of the Worlds Largest Coal Companies Misled Investors About Climate Change Risk
2015-11-10 15:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Newsweek: Just days after President Barack Obama rejected the Keystone XL pipeline, environmentalists were handed another victory Monday morning when New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released the results of an investigation that found one of the world's largest coal companies had misled the public and its shareholders about the risks climate change could pose to its bottom line. After several years of investigations, Schneiderman reached an agreement with Peabody Energy that won't require...

Sydney Morning Herald: China has become a "wild card" for global coal markets as its demand for the fossil fuel ebbs and it helps drive a worldwide rush into renewable energy sources, the International Energy Agency says. In its closely watched World Energy Outlook report for 2015, the agency projects coal will account for just 10 per cent of any increase in global energy demand out to 2040, far shy of the fuel's 45 per cent contribution over the past decade. Renewable energy subsidies are less than one-quarter of...

2015-11-10 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Poliltico: The big climate news last week was President Obama's decision to reject the Keystone oil pipeline, so there wasn't much attention paid to an electric utility's decision to retire a 60-year-old coal plant in Alton, Illinois. Unlike Keystone, the Wood River Power Station isn't a global symbol of global warming. Its owner is closing it voluntarily, for economic as well as environmental reasons. And coal plants get shut down all the time; Wood River was the 206th announced retirement in the U.S. in the...
