Kenyan regulators oppose parliamentary attempts to split mobile money from telecoms services

(Telecompaper) Kenya's communication and financial sector regulators have warned against parliament's quest to split mobile money transfer services off from telecoms operators, Business Daily reported. The Ministry of ICT, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) on 10 July asked lawmakers to be cautious in their effort to de-link  services such as M-Pesa, Airtel Money and T-Kash from their parent mobile telecommunication firms.

Facebook plans own mobile money wallet based on new Libra currency

(Telecompaper) Facebook has released more details of its planned currency Libra. The first product will be a digital wallet designed to make it easy to save, spend and transfer money over the internet. The wallet will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app, with an expected launch in 2020, the company said.

MTN extends Ericsson mobile money contract for 5 years, to launch in more markets

(Telecompaper) MTN and Ericsson have signed a five-year contract extension to deploy new products and provide managed services for mobile money services in 13 countries across Africa and the Middle East. The new contract includes deployment of Ericsson Wallet Platform in new markets on top of the existing 13 countries.

T-Mobile US starts trial for Money mobile banking service

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile US has started a trial of T-Mobile Money, a mobile banking service it says will give a 4 percent annual percentage yield (APY) on balances of up to USD 3000, for people putting at least USD 200 per month in their checking account. Users will be able to access over 55,000 no-fee ATMs worldwide with the Allpoint ATM Network. The service is FDIC insured and provides 24/7 customer support. T-Mobile US says the service has for the moment only been rolled out as a pilot, on a limited basis.

Orange, MTN launch mobile money interoperability across Africa

(Telecompaper) Orange Group and MTN Group have announced a joint venture, Mowali (mobile wallet interoperability), to enable interoperable payments across the continent. Mowali makes it possible to send money between mobile money accounts issued by any mobile money provider, in real time and at low cost. Mowali will immediately benefit from the reach of MTN Mobile Money and Orange Money, bringing together over 100 million mobile money accounts and mobile money operations in 22 of sub-Saharan Africa's 46 markets.
