Low oil and gas prices lead to big writedown at Chesapeake Energy

Chesapeake Energy performed better than analysts expected during the third quarter even as a $5.4 billion writedown wiped out its profits and the sustained drop in energy prices means more writedowns are coming. Chesapeake posted a net loss of $4.7 billion, or $7.08 a share, compared with a profit of $662 million, or 26 cents, a year earlier, the Oklahoma City-based company said Wednesday.

Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and SABMiller PLC plan to request on Wednesday another extension for a formal takeover offer as the companies seek more time to finish complex paperwork and continue talks on the sale of SABMiller's U.S. business, according to people familiar with the request. It will be the second extension the companies have requested since announcing an agreement in principle on Oct. 13. An announcement is expected on Wednesday announcing the new deadline for a formal proposal.
