Has Google lost the plot again at I/O 2014, or is there a method in the madness?
2014-06-26 15:39:48| Extremetech
Back in 2011, Google's incoming CEO Larry Page promised to put 'more wood behind fewer arrows.' Since then, Google has made good on the promise and proceeded to shut down a large number of products (Reader, iGoogle, Buzz), and integrated or combined many others. Now, after watching Google's I/O 2014 keynote, it would seem that Google's spartan, utilitarian days are over: We're now back to Google's timeworn strategy of throwing product ideas at a wall to see what sticks. Has Google lost the plot again, or is there a method in the madness?
Google starts removing personal data from search results
2014-06-26 13:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google said it has begun to remove results from its search engine under the EU's 'right to be forgotten', following a European Court of Justice ruling in May that individuals can request that search engine to remove results of searches for their names. The court decided that Google had to weigh the right to privacy against public interest in the data. Google has updated its technical infrastructure to implement the removals. The first e-mails informing people that the requested link was being blocked are being sent on 26 June. Google has only processed a small part of the over 41,000 requests received through a web form it published in response to the ruling. Google said "This is a new process for us. Each request has to be assessed individually, and we're working as quickly as possible to get through the queue. We'll continue to work with data protection authorities and others as we implement this ruling."

Google service analyzes live streaming data
2014-06-26 13:05:55| InfoWorld: Top News
Taking what many see as the next step in big data analysis, Google is previewing a service called Google Cloud Dataflow that analyzes live data, potentially giving users the ability to view trends and be alerted to events as they happen. "There's an enormous amount of data being created, and so you need a way to ingest that in a more intelligent way," said Brian Goldfarb, Google Cloud Platform head of marketing. With big data, "the program models are different. The technologies are different. It requires developers to learn a lot and manage a lot to make it happen."
