Great mambo mouse brains created from human DNA
2015-02-23 18:31:18| Extremetech
A favorite technique of neuroscientists is to take our genes, or even whole cells, and stick them into mouse brains to see what they do. Researchers from Duke found that if they gave some mice our human version of HARE5, and other mice the chimp version of HARE5, the humanized mice grew great mambo brains.

Bad news, future: Computer brains are easily tricked by optical illusions, too
2014-12-12 18:49:58| Extremetech
For some reason, we often think of computers as infallible -- subjective, logical, rational, and nearly always right. There is something about a computer's lack of emotion and intelligence that makes them strangely trustworthy -- while, on the other hand, despite their massive intelligence, we all know that humans are deeply flawed and prone to all sorts of biases. As it turns out, computers are deeply flawed as well: Optical illusions can work on computers, too.

Bat brains and neural donuts: Do all animals have an internal 3D GPS?
2014-12-05 20:15:42| Extremetech
There's a GPS in your brain! Your neurons are 3D compasses! Researchers from the Weizmann Institute in Israel have recently published some new findings regarding how brains encode head direction in three dimensions. We take a critical look at new findings from the Weizmann institute about how bats, or any creature, actually find there way in the world.
