Video Game Rejuvenates Brains of Older Adults

2013-09-06 16:00:00| TechNewsWorld

A multitasking 3D video game that helped some older adults show neurological activity similar to much younger adults could shed light on the plasticity of the older brain. A UCSF research team recently tested a 3D-driving game on a group of adults. The game play was designed to elicit a multitasking response, which generates a certain interference in the brain that increases with age.

Researchers create the first lab-grown human mini brains

2013-08-28 19:01:00| Extremetech

Researchers in Austria have developed a new three-dimensional culture system for growing mini brains in the lab. They began with a custom blend of human stem cells growing inside a spinning bioreactor, and coerced them to assemble into complex structures they call "cerebral organoids." After two months of growth, these unassuming tenderloins reached their maximum size -- one far shy of an actual human brain -- but they have persisted ten months now, and their survival appears indefinite.

Decapitated worms can regenerate their brains, and the memories stored inside

2013-07-11 16:19:33| Extremetech

Biologists at Tufts University have removed the head and brain of a worm by decapitation, and then watched as it regenerated both its head and brain -- and, somewhat miraculously, the memories stored inside. At first glance, this finding would seem to confirm cellular memory -- the theory that data can be somehow stored by cells that are outside of the brain. More research will undoubtedly have to occur before such a highly contested hypothesis is confirmed, however.
