Astronomers are slowly figuring out why standard candle supernovae explode
2016-03-24 15:30:02| Extremetech
One of the more recent finding of astronomy is that stars, as far apart as they are, really like to form pairs. These so-called “binary star systems” are everywhere, and as new evidence comes in we’re beginning to see that binary systems may be just as common as the “regular” kind; for instance, about half…

NIST develops measurement standard for breast cancer MRI.
2016-03-24 13:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
Researchers at NIST have developed the first widely useful standard for magnetic resonance imaging of the breast. NIST phantom will help standardize MRIs of breast tissue and ensure quality control in comparing images within and between medical research studies. Phantom mimics response of human tissue to help test performance of medical imaging systems. It supports quantitative MRI, which is increasingly used for breast cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment monitoring.

ASTM Standard helps monitor radioactive material in water.
2016-03-24 13:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
On World Water Day, ASTM International approved new standard that will help laboratories monitor for presence of technetium-99 (Tc-99) in water. Tc-99 is a radioactive material often found around facilities that handle nuclear material. D8026, Practice for Determination of Tc-99 in Water by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, will provide environmental monitoring community and others with a rapid and accurate way to measure its presence using mass spectrometry.
