Oh, Great: Antarctica and Greenland Are Melting Faster Than Ever

2014-08-21 16:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Motherboard: Oh great, ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are melting at the fastest rate in recorded history. A group of researchers in Germany spent about three years measuring the two ice sheets melting, and figured out that with the two sheets combined, theyre thinning at the rate of about 500 cubic kilometers every year, according to research published yesterday in The Cryopshere. When we compare the current data with those from the ICESat satellite from the year 2009, the volume loss in Greenland...

Scientists See Record Decline In Greenland And Antarctic Ice Sheets

2014-08-21 13:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RedOrbit: Data from the European Space Agency`s (ESA) CryoSat-2 spacecraft has been used to map elevation and elevation changes in both Greenland and Antarctica by a team of researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Germany. The new maps, which are the most complete to ever be created from a single satellite mission, reveal the ice sheets are losing volume at an unprecedented yearly rate (approximately 500 cubic kilometers). The study findings and maps were recently published in The Cryosphere....

Previous Greenland Ice Sheet Collapse Rose Sea Level up to 6 Meter

2014-06-26 22:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: More than 400,000 years ago, a warming period pushed Greenland's ice sheet past its limit and raised global sea levels up to 6 meters, according to new research. The results may give us a glimpse as to what may happen as a result of Greenland's current climate-induced melting dilemma. Known as the Marine Isotope Stage 11, this exceptionally long warming period between ice ages resulted in a global sea level rise of about 6-13 meters above present, caused by changes in the Earth's orbit around...

Greenland Ice Sheet Collapse Linked To Sea Level Rise 400,000 Years Ago: Study

2014-06-26 22:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RedOrbit: A new study suggests that a warming period more than 400,000 years ago pushed the Greenland ice sheet past its stability threshold, resulting in a nearly complete deglaciation of southern Greenland and raising global sea levels some 4-6 meters. The study is one of the first to zero in on how the vast Greenland ice sheet responded to warmer temperatures during that period, which were caused by changes in the Earth`s orbit around the sun. Results of the study, which was funded by the National...

Newly Discovered Frozen Underworld Beneath Greenland Speeding its Flow to the Sea

2014-06-16 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: Beneath the barren whiteness of Greenland, there lies a mysterious frozen underworld, which through its melting and refreezing process, may be speeding its ice flow to the sea. Using ice-penetrating radar, researchers have discovered ragged blocks of ice as tall as city skyscrapers and as wide as the island of Manhattan at the very bottom of the ice sheet. Scientists said the findings, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, could deepen their understanding of how the ice sheets of Greenland...
