Introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Medical Innovation Act proposes to increase funding for the National Institutes of Health by creating a new statutory scheme that would impose fee on biopharmaceutical companies working on critical treatments and cures for patients. According to BIO President and CEO, Jim Greenwood, BIO supports increased funding for NIH, but has serious concerns about the impact this legislation would have on research and development.

Antibiotics firm Motif Bio to tap UK market for cash

Motif Bio, which is working on a range of antibiotics, is planning to raise at least 4 million pounds - and potentially up to 16 million - through a stock market listing in London. The plan shows increased interest in badly needed new antibiotics that are seen as essential to counter the spread of "superbug" bacteria.

Greenwood noted several of BIO's suggestions within said draft and expressed support for provisions "intended to further incentivize biomedical innovation and help expedite the development of new treatments and cures."
