CHARLTON – A MassPIRG lawyer told the Board of Health Tuesday night that the Southbridge landfill operator's expansion plan was "ridiculous and insulting” to nearby residents whose private wells are contaminated. The lawyer, Kirstie L. Pecci, asked the Board of Health to send letters to the state Department of Environmental Protection and office of the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act opposing the Casella Waste Systems plan.

Consultants for Southbridge landfill operator Casella Waste Systems are working on a proposal to provide public water to a neighborhood of homes whose private wells are contaminated, the Telegram & Gazette has learned. According to a recent email from Charlton's water-sewer administrator Steve Wandland to water-sewer commissioners, a call was placed recently by Walsh Engineering, working with Wright-Pierce Engineering, to the water-sewer office.

CHARLTON – Casella Waste Systems, operator of the Southbridge Recycling and Disposal Park, aims to identify the direction of groundwater in a nearby neighborhood of contaminated private wells by putting data-logging pressure transducers in seven residential wells, a spokesman for the company told the Board of Health on Tuesday. The Vermont-based waste management company wants to put the transducers in the wells of Charlton homes at 54, 81, 90, 102 H Foote Road, 9 and 19 Eleanor Lane, and 190 Berry Corner Road.

CHARLTON – The state is ordering oil giant ExxonMobil Corp. to test 42 private home wells near three public schools to assess a migrating plume of groundwater contamination caused by a large gasoline tank explosion more than 25 years ago. In addition, the Telegram & Gazette has learned that two schools, the Charlton Middle and Heritage schools, have had small detections of a possible carcinogenic gasoline chemical in their pre-filtered drinking water for years.

CHARLTON – Town officials have enlisted the expertise of a famous environmental activist to help move negotiations with ExxonMobil Corp. to remediate groundwater contamination. The state Department of Environmental Protection named ExxonMobil the responsible party for contaminating groundwater when large amounts of gasoline leaked from its underground fuel tanks at two Charlton locations in the 1980s and 1990s.
