CHARLTON – The state has given Casella Waste Systems conditional approval of its response plan for Charlton homes near the Southbridge landfill with tainted wells. At a health board meeting Tuesday, consultant Gary E. Magnuson of CMG Environmental reported the state Department of Environmental Protection issued ten conditions on the IRA plan submitted by Casella Waste Systems in December.

CHARLTON – The good news from a consultant speaking at a Board of Health meeting Tuesday was “there is no more bad news to report” regarding residential well contamination near the Southbridge landfill. Gary E. Magnuson of CMG Environmental, consultant to the board, reported to the board and a roomful of residents that landfill operator Casella Waste Systems continues well water testing at Charlton homes and no new detections have been found.

CHARLTON – It's been more than 40 days since Casella Waste Systems announced to a crowded health board meeting that 21 private wells in Charlton, near the Southbridge landfill, tested positive for pollutants, and residents say they are still waiting for answers. That night, William Gallien, whose home well at 74 H Foote Road was tainted by probable human carcinogen 1,4-dioxane at a level greater than safe drinking water guidelines, asked whether it was safe to bathe and wash dishes in his well water.
