Providing us with a delightful glimpse of the future of humanity and bionic implants, Second Sight -- the developer of the first bionic eye to receive FDA approval in the US -- is currently working on a firmware upgrade that gives users of the Argus II bionic eye better resolution, focus, and image zooming. The software update even provides users with color recognition, even though the original version of the device only provides black and white vision.

Wireless, solar-powered bionic eyes benefit from sub-retinal placement

A team of Engineers from Stanford, and Glasgow, Scotland, have made some incredible advances on their earlier designs for a photovoltaic bionic eye. Their new paper, published in Nature Communications, describes how they can now create a pocket underneath the retina, and pop in a wireless visual processor that is fed by infrared pulses from an external camera.

An ultrasonic intra-body communication network for bionic implants

Researchers at the University of Buffalo have just received a prestigious grant to develop ultrasonic body-area networks for implant communication. While still in its infancy, the field needs to mature rapidly to meet the problems of implant congestion that already looms for several classes of devices.
