We are currently looking for a Hyperspectral Infrared Sounding Expert to support our customer in Germany. Hyperspectral Infrared Sounding Expert Key Tasks and Responsibilities Part of the Hyperspectral Infrared Team, which is responsible for the scientific development, maintenance, validation and routine monitoring of hyperspectral infrared L1 products in support of the development and operations of the customer geostationary and polar orbiting systems, you will have the following responsibilities Integration and verification of external software deliveries in the prototype processor Development and documentation of prototype software and test procedures Development and maintenance of hyperspectral L1 monitoring tools Development and maintenance of intercomparison with other infrared data tools Generation of test data Statistical analysis and visualisation of calibrated Level 1 radiances Support the transfer and exchange of the expertise developed with IASI L1 to the other hyperspectral infrared missions IASING and MTGIRS. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, astrophysics, meteorology or remote sensing or equivalent Hyperspectral Infrared instrument data processing e.g. for IASI data Developing and testing complex scientific software, handling and processing big amounts of data Numerical algorithms and satellite data analysis Familiar with calibration processes hyperspectral sounders Object oriented techniqes and software tools for version control UNIXLinux operating systems knowledge with use of shellpython scripts Advanced use of high level programming languages such as C, IDL Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of French language is an advantage. This team is responsible for the scientific development, maintenance, validation and routine monitoring of hyperspectral infrared L1 products in support of the development and operations of EUMETSATs geostationary and polar orbiting systems. The Key Person shall contribute to the continued improvement of current operational and prototype products, considering opportunities and new requirements from the user community. Heshe shall support the implementation, the evaluation and the monitoring of these algorithms. PROFILE The engineer shall have a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as computer science, mathematics, physics, astrophysics, meteorology or remote sensing. The Key Person shall have at least three years of experience in the field of scientific computing. Specifically, the Key Person shall have experience and skills in Numerical algorithms Development and testing of complex scientific software Handling and processing of big amounts of data Object oriented techniques for scientific computing Software tools for revision control Use of a high level programming language, preferably C UnixLinux environment with the use of shell or python scripts Advanced use of data analysis, preferably with satellite data Advanced use of programming languages like IDL Knowledge in calibration processes, and if possible in case of hyperspectral sounders Experience in some of the following areas is considered as advantages Radiometric calibration Spectral calibration Apodisation techniques Further mathematical techniques Fourier Transform, statistical techniques, etc. Familiarity with satellite data, preferably from IASI or other hyperspectral infrared instruments Use of radiative transfer models Data formats and libraries such as HDF5, NetCDF and BUFR Software testing Validation and visualization of satellite products Software libraries for numerical linear algebra and similar subroutines Experience with further programming relevant languages and tools such as Perl,Python, Java, etc. Experience in multithreads programming The engineer shall have good interpersonal skills. Heshe shall have the ability to write concise and comprehensive scientifictechnical reports. The applicant shall be willing and able to learn about new topics as required for the tasks. The applicant shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and structured manner, shall be able to work calmly and correctly under stress. The ability to pay attention to details is mandatory, especially in the context of thorough software verification before release. The engineer must be able to work with the minimum of supervision. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore the Key person must be able to work effectively in this language and have knowledge of the other.
