Before she was ousted from office by a military coup in May, Thailand's prime minister pushed an interesting initiative through government: To use robots to banish the world of bad Thai food. Robot butlers with RFID scanners could be used as service animals
2014-09-23 21:24:11| Extremetech
We already use dogs and monkeys as service animals to help people with disabilities, so why not use robots as well? Researchers at Georgia Tech have combined RFID tags, long-distance scanners, and a self-propelled robot to develop a method of reliably locating objects in a real-world setting. With this set-up, people with reduced mobility or short-term memory can ask the robot for help finding important items like medicine or documents.

MITs Cheetah robot is let off its leash, can now run and jump silently across fields
2014-09-16 14:22:27| Extremetech
MIT's Cheetah robot has finally been let off the leash -- and boy can it run. Watch as it bounds across a grass field, and even jumps over a hurdle. It isn't quite up to the evolutionary magnificence of its biological counterpart, which can hit 60 mph in a couple of seconds, but it's still pretty impressive. 'Our robot can be silent and as efficient as animals. The only things you hear are the feet hitting the ground,' says MIT's Sangbae Kim.

Traveling at about 7 kph on monorail that is attached to fence structure, RoboGuard conducts regular inspections of fence line, which are essential to maintaining integrity of perimeter. Robot can also respond and check on any suspected intrusion as needed. Complete system consists of autonomous robots, each covering up to 1 km, with docking station in between 2 adjacent robots, servicing them both with battery recharging and wireless communication.
