Telecom Italia activates 5G in Naples, targets over 300 localities by 2021

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has announced the launch of commercial 5G services in Naples, the third city to receive the technology following last month's activation in parts of Turin and Rome, and revealed that it's targeting a total of 120 cities and 200 tourist destinations by 2021. In a statement, TIM said the 5G network offering initial speeds of up to 2 Gbps will be made available in another 6 major cities (Milan, Bologna, Verona, Florence, Matera and Bari) by the end of 2019. It also plans to cover 30 tourist destinations throughout Italy, 50 industrial districts and complete 30 dedicated 5G projects for large companies.

Former CEO Genish resigns from Telecom Italia board

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has confirmed that its former chief executive Amos Genish has resigned from the company's board around eight months after being ousted and then replaced by current CEO Luigi Gubitosi. In a statement TIM said Canal+ Group deputy CEO for France Frank Cadoret had replaced Genish as board representative for the operator's main shareholder, French media group Vivendi. TIM said Genish would be paid the lump sum of EUR 4.2 million within 30 days "in light of the mutual renunciation of any reciprocal claim or dispute in relation to the past employment relationship between the parties."

Ibarra confirmed as new Sky Italia CEO

(Telecompaper) Satellite broadcaster Sky Italia has confirmed that current KPN CEO Maximo Ibarra will take over as its new chief executive on 01 October immediately after leaving the Dutch operator. In a statement cited by La Stampa and other Italian dailies, Sky Italia said Ibarra's background played a key role in his appointment ahead of the launch of its telecommunications service later this year.

(Telecompaper) Maximo Ibarra is set to take over as Sky Italia's new chief executive after stepping down as CEO of Dutch operator KPN at the end of September, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. The Colombian-Italian executive, a former head of Wind Tre, became KPN's first foreign CEO in April 2018 and has helped streamline the Dutch company's brands and relaunch its FTTH rollout.

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has become the second operator to offer commercial 5G services in Italy with the activation of its network in parts of Turin and Rome accompanied by the launch of three new dedicated 5G-ready plans. Vodafone switched on its 5G network in the same two cities and in the Milan metropolitan area, Bologna and Naples on 16 June. "The 5G service, currently being implemented, is at the moment only available in some parts of Turin and Rome," announced the operator on its website, adding that all of Italy's main cities will be gradually added over time. TIM reached an agreement with Vodafone to share the cost of rolling out new 5G infrastructure throughout Italy earlier this year.
