(Telecompaper) Vodafone Italia has switched on its 5G network in five cities across the country ahead of next month's launch of 5G roaming in the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. The 'Giga Network 5G' service is available in the Milan metropolitan area (including 28 surrounding localities), Rome, Turin, Bologna and Naples, with around 45 to 50 cities to follow next year, rising to a total of 100 by 2021, said the company's CEO Aldo Bisio during the official launch event in Milan. Telecom Italia revenues down 3% in Q1, fibre clients soar to 6 mln
2019-05-21 08:55:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia reported a 2.9 percent year-on-year decline in revenues to EUR 4.47 billion in the first quarter of 2019, hit by increased domestic competition and the decision to close low-zero margin wholesale contracts at its international services arm Sparkle. The company's EBITDA for the quarter likewise fell, by 2.1 percent year on year on organic terms, to EUR 1.79 billion. However, the company said EBITDA was essentially flat on comparable terms and a substantial improvement on the 9.9 percent slump posted in the final quarter of 2018 thanks in part to a 1.7 percent rise in revenues at its TIM Brasil unit, coupled with cost reduction and a 6.5 percent decline in capital expenditure due to increased efficiency.

Sky Italia finalising plans to launch telephony service, headhunting CEO - report
2019-04-11 14:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Pay-TV provider Sky Italia is set to imminently launch an MVNO in Italy followed by a fixed line telecommunications service and is headhunting an experienced CEO for the venture, reports local daily La Repubblica. Last year the company confirmed that it was planning to enter Italy's fixed broadband market in summer 2019 after signing a long-term agreement with Open Fiber. The pay-TV giant was then added to regulator Agcom's public register of communications operators (Registro pubblico Operatori di Comunicazione) at the end of 2018 and was reportedly in talks with Vodafone Italia and Telecom Italia about using their frequencies for a Sky-branded mobile service.
