China grants 5G licenses to China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom

(Telecompaper) China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has granted commercial 5G licences to the country's three telecom operators China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, as well as to cable network company China Broadcasting Network. "This [5G license award] marks China's official entry to the 5G era," Huawei said. The company and ZTE both announced they will "fully support" Chinese operators in the deployment of their 5G networks.

Skype to face EU telecom regulation after Belgium wins court ruling

(Telecompaper) SkypeOut is a telecom service and as such the company should be subject to EU telecoms regulation, the EU Court of Justice has ruled. The case was brought by the Belgian regulator BIPT against the company for failure to pay operator regulatory fees. Skype further lost a Belgian court case requiring the company to comply with a law enforcement request for access to user communications, a requirement for all telecom providers.

SK Telecom demonstrates in-car 5G-ATSC 3.0 broadcasting
