NASA has announced that the next Mars rover -- currently codenamed Mars 2020 -- will be outfitted with an array of sophisticated, upgraded scientific instruments that will let it delve deeper and farther than Curiosity, with the hope that it will be able to uncover signs of life on Mars. Perhaps even more excitingly, Mars 2020 will also be equipped with a new instrument that can convert the carbon dioxide in Mars' atmosphere into oxygen -- this is of utmost importance if humanity ever colonizes Mars -- and another instrument that will gather and store Martian rock samples for eventual return to Earth.

Since 2001, the Parkes radio telescope in Australia has been picking up mysterious, unidentified bursts of energy that astronomers have since dubbed 'fast radio bursts.' At first, because no other telescope in the world had ever seen these bursts, it was assumed that these FRBs were probably just glitches in the telescope's electronics -- but now, 13 years later, a telescope on the other side of the planet in Puerto Rico has detected an FRB. No one knows what's causing these FRBs, but it's almost certainly something very exotic, like an intelligent alien civilization.

In a public meeting with NASA's chief, the agency's top scientists have said that they expect to find alien life within the next 20 years. Unfortunately, for those hoping that Europa or Mars might harbor life, NASA is fairly confident that the discovery of extraterrestrials will probably be outside our Solar System rather than within it. But still, suffice it to say, the discovery of life of any kind outside of Earth's atmosphere would be massive news. Within 20 years, we could finally find out that we're not alone in the universe -- and, well, that would change everything.
