Activision to buy King for USD 5.9 billion

(Telecompaper) Activision Blizzard and King Digital Entertainment have signed a definitive agreement under which Activision subsidiary ABS will acquire all of the outstanding shares of King for USD 18 in cash per share, for a total equity value of USD 5.9 billion. The price implies a 20 percent premium over King's closing price on 30 October. The two companies' boards unanimously approved the acquisition being implemented under a scheme of arrangement under Irish law. Pending approval by King's shareholders, the Irish High Court and antitrust authorities, the acquisition is expected to be completed in spring 2016. The combined company will have more than half a billion monthly active users in 196 countries, and will be a leader in mobile gaming. Activision Blizzard believes the acquisition will be accretive to 2016 estimated non-GAAP revenues and earnings per share by approximately 30 percent and significantly accretive to 2016 estimated free cash flow per share.

Vimpelcom takes USD 900 mln charge for Uzbek investigation

(Telecompaper) Vimpelcom announced it will take a provision of USD 900 million to cover potential liabilities in the investigation into its Uzbekistan activities. Vimpelcom said it was still in talks with the authorities on resolving the case and there was no assurance as to the final cost to the company. The Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice in the US where Vimpelcom is listed and the Public Prosecutor (Openbaar Ministerie) of the Netherlands where Vimpelcom is based are investigating how Vimpelcom obtained its operating licence in Uzbekistan. The company is suspected of paying bribes to a close relative of Uzbek president Islam Karimov, in exchange for access to Uzbekistan's telecommunications market. Vimpelcom has been in talks with the authorities on settling case since early this year.

Sprint introduces USD 20 'unlimited' data plan

(Telecompaper) Sprint is introducing a new headline offer for mobile data of 1 GB per month for USD 20. After using up the allowance, customers are reduced to 2G speeds, or they can buy a top-up. Adding unlimited calls and texts costs another USD 20 per month. In a riposte to rival T-Mobile's marketing about overage charges, Sprint said it's also introducing unlimited data for customers on the Sprint Family Share Pack plans. After using up their monthly allowance, they will not be charged extra for additional data, but will see speeds reduced to 2G levels. They can buy additional high-speed data for USD 15 per GB. Lastly, Sprint is introducing a USD 70 plan with 3GB of mobile hotspot usage and Sprint Global Roaming. Additional lines with the same unlimited high-speed data, talk and text are USD 60 per line (up to 10 lines).

PayPal sales up 15% to USD 2.26 bln, adds 4 mln users

(Telecompaper) Digital payment processor PayPal reported third quarter revenues up 15 percent year on year to USD 2.26 billion, or USD 0.31 per share, just below its anticipated earnings target of USD 2.27 billion, or USD 0.29 per share. In what was the company's first earnings report since splitting from eBay in July, PayPal said the strength of the USD dollar hurt its transaction volumes in Europe and China, with revenues rising 19 percent on an FX neutral basis. However, the company's adjusted profits rose 31 percent to USD 377 million and it increased its total payment volume by 27 percent to USD 68.74 billion, including USD 2.1 billion processed through its P2P app Venmo, which grew 200 percent year on year. Transactions from mobile devices were up 38 percent from the previous quarter alone to a total of 345 million. Customer numbers increased from 169 million in Q3 to 173 million on 30 September and the company continued to add new partners, announcing deals with Macy's, Shell in the UK and Latin America's largest mobile provider America Movil.

MTN confirms USD 5.2 bln fine in Nigeria

(Telecompaper) MTN Group has confirmed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has imposed a fine equivalent to USD 5.2 billion on its subsidiary in Nigeria. In a statement to its shareholders, MTN said this fine relates to the timing of the disconnection of 5.1 million MTN Nigeria subscribers who were disconnected in August and September for failure to register their personal details. The fine is based on an amount of NGN 200,000 for each unregistered subscriber. MTN Nigeria said it's in discussions with the NCC "to resolve the matter in recognition of the circumstances that prevailed with regard to these subscribers".
