AT&T sells Puerto Rico, USVI assets to Liberty Latin America for USD 1.95 bln

(Telecompaper) AT&T has agreed to sell its operations in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to Liberty Latin America for USD 1.95 billion in cash, confirming earlier reports. In a statement, the US operator said it expects the deal to close within 6 to 9 months following review by the FCC and the Department of Justice. It added that the sale includes network assets, leases and real estate, 1.1 million mobile subscribers and contracts. A total of 1,300 current AT&T employees will move over to Liberty Latin America at the close of the deal.
Zimbabwean mobile money cash-ins surge 108% to USD 2.4 bln in Q2

(Telecompaper) The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) said mobile money cash-in transactions surged 108 percent to USD 2.4 billion in the second quarter to June 2019 from USD 1.2 billion in the first quarter 2019, as mobile money users grew. Cash-out transactions increased by 63 percent from USD 795.5 million to USD 1.3 billion. The increase is attributable to the general rise in the prices of goods and services coupled with cash challenges, too.

Amazon rolls out USD 13 a month Music HD streaming service

(Telecompaper) Amazon has announced the launch of a new high quality tier for its Music subscription service to compete with rival lossless audio streaming players including Tidal, Deezer and Qobuz. The new plan, dubbed Amazon Music HD, lets customers stream more than 50 million songs in High Definition (HD) audio and millions of songs in Ultra HD (UHD), described as the highest quality streaming audio available. HD audio is defined as 16-bit files with sample rates of 44.1kHz and above, while UHD has a depth of 24 bits and a sample rate of 96 kHz to 192 kHz.
