EPSSG System and Instrument Functional Chain Engineer 2013024 Job Description We are looking for a System andor Instrument Functional Chain Engineer for our customer, EUMETSAT. Depending on your profile you will join one of the following specialised teams to support the overall System Team for this mission. System Engineering Team in charge of the definition, specification and design of EPSSG System. It supports the Operations Preparation Team aiming to guarantee the operational readiness of the system at the handover to the Operations Department and supports the IVV Team for the Integration, Verification and Validation activities at System level. IFCT Engineering Team in charge of the management of endtoend aspects of the Instrument Functional Chains to ensure that the level 1 and level 2 products generated by the EPSSG System meet the requirements. Required Skills and Experience A university degree or equivalent in experience in a relevant discipline Between 1 and 3 years in the field of System engineering or instrument data processing of complex space systems with experience in the field of engineering of space andor ground systems, in the area of LowEarth Orbiting satellites including endtoend data acquisition and processing verifying instrument data processing systems development of test data sets, test tools or instrument data processor prototypes specification of operational products for earth observation missions requirementsbased design, development and verification process of polar satellite systems following the ECSS standards and using DOORS Knowledge of relevant spaceborne observation instruments EPSSG satellites will embark sounders and imagers from the ultraviolet to the microwave range, a scatterometer and a radiooccultation instrument. Strong data analysis, processing and synthesis skills Able to fulfil the assigned tasks with minimum supervision, have a systematic approach to work, able to plan the work and cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks Capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation Good communication skills verbal and written Willing to provide consultancy to a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. BACKGROUND Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration INRC is a critical function for achieving targeted performances in the processing of Earth observation satellite data. This builds on in depth scientific understanding of specific design features of spacecraft and instruments e.g. pointing, geometric, radiometric and multispectral performances and of the use of external elements e.g. selected natural observation targets to improve over intrinsic performances of instruments and achieve Level 1 products of suitable geometric and radiometric quality. The Competence Area Manager Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration CAM INRC manages the team of scientists responsible for the scientific calibration, validation and quality monitoring of the level1 products from Low Earth and geostationary missions. The responsibility encompass also the support to development and maintenance of critical Level 1 product processing functions mainly for GEO missions, but also for LEO INRC functions. DUTIES Manage the Image Navigation, Registration and Calibration Competence Area INRC CA, seeking continued development of the scientific knowledge required to support the exploitation, development, and evolution of level1 processing chains for EUMETSAT and Copernicus instruments Lead the implementation and operations of nearrealtime quality monitoring tools, the definition and scientific evaluation of related algorithms and the prototyping of INRCrelated processing software for the generation of level1 products for current MSG, EPS, Sentinel3 and future MTG, EPSSG, Sentinel456 missions Assess requirements and priorities for calibration, intercalibration, and validation of level1 products and support the definition and execution of calibration and validation plans Interact with the communities of users, collect and analyse their feedback on the relevance and quality of the generated products and their requirements for improved level1 products Lead the definition and maintain the science roadmap for improving the geometric and radiometric quality of level1 products, responding to user requirements, including assessment of their value to user communities Initiate and manage internal and external contributing studies Coordinate all operations support activities for level1 products derived from the GEO imaging missions. Participate in the operational coordination of all level 1 processing activities within EUMETSAT Support the Satellite Application Facilities involved in the exploitation of EUMETSAT Level 1 products, as required. The ideal candidate will work within the frame of programmes and studies undertaken by the Radar Payloads Unit, to contribute to the engineering activity of performance analysis and definition of models. Task description Tradeoff analyses concerning radar instruments the candidate shall perform the tradeoff analyses related to the design of radar Instruments, to the definition of radar instrument architectures and of their main sub systems antenna, antenna frontend, RF section, digital section. In particular, the candidate shall focus hisher activity on the definition of the digital section of synthetic aperture radars SAR and of the related onboard processing e.g. digital waveform generation and management, echo digital filtering, digital beamforming, data decimation, data compression and formatting. Definition of radar payloads requirements in the design phases of programmes related to radar payloads, the candidate shall perform analyses and assessments to support the Instrument Architect at the aim of establishing requirements at levels of instrument, and shall contribute to issue requirement documents for radar instrument, assemblies, equipment and units. Definition and maintenance of radar payloads budgets the candidate shall contribute to prepare and maintain budgets related to radar payload. Definition and development of software tools e.g. Matlab tools, Excel worksheets, etc. for supporting simulations and analyses required for the phases of design and verification of radar payloads hardware. Evaluation of test results and participation to test campaigns the candidate shall contribute to evaluate radar payload performance by taking part to test campaigns and evaluating test results at level of instrument, assembly, equipment and unit. Participation to meetings with the SAR Instrument design team. Participation to meetingsreviews with internal and external subcontractors. Participation to meetingsreviews with both internal and external customers. Preparation of documents and presentations. Personal requirements Master degree or PhD in either Remote Sensing Engineering, or Telecommunication Engineering, or Electronics Engineering. Background in the field of digital electronics design, simulations and analysis skills and experience in the fields of Antenna and RF design are considered as distinctive elements. Knowledge of Matlab, MS Office products. Knowledge of the English language at least at intermediate level for both written and verbal communication. Attitude to teamwork.

One post will focus on geometric processing, navigation, and geometric image quality, and the second on radiometric processing, instrument calibration, and radiometric image quality. DUTIES Support algorithm development for Level1 data processing chains of current and future imaging missions and the commissioning and maintenance of these chains Support the monitoring of image quality and calibration of the generated Level1 image products for both low Earth LEO and geostationary GEO orbit systems, including the development of stateofart tools for analysis Develop and maintain prototype software, in particular geometric and radiometric processing algorithms, in order to improve the operational implementations of Level1 processing across low Earth and geostationary orbit missions Support the development, procurement, and operations of tools to monitor Level1 calibration and product quality Support the verification, validation and support during the initial operations phase of the Level1 data processing systems including commissioning, the initial focus being on the MTG and EPSSG missions As a member of multidisciplinary Instrument Functional Chain teams, interact and cooperate with other scientists and instrument system engineers to optimise the design, development, performance and commissioning of endtoend instrument chains from sensing to Level 1 products Support interactions with ESA, other development partners and contractors responsible for the development of satellites and instruments to appropriate the required instrument knowledge Interact with the Operations team to optimise the performances during exploitation Initiate and lead relevant scientifictechnical studies, including the management of external support contracts.
