What Do Farmers Need to Know About Climate Change? Altered Planting Routines and Weeds
2018-06-04 22:52:42| National Farmers Union
By Janan Lenzy, Information Systems Coordinator The proliferation of weeds on farmland can impede the growth of crops and forage. As the climate continues to change, longer seasons and warmer temperatures will likely encourage the propagation of invasive species. There are a number of methods by which farmers and ranchers can combat weed pressures. Here […]

Can you apply your background and considerable experience in Meteorology or Remote Sensing to undertake scientific developments for the rescue, recalibration and reprocessing of satellite observations to Level 1 products in support of the Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S? To learn more and apply online, please visit httpsonlineapplication.eumetsat.int by 19th June. We anticipate holding interviews wc 16th July. EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. Developing the next generation of satellites, we look to shape our future. We require a Climate Product Expert to work within the Climate Services Team, and to focus on the processing of satellite data to Level 1 in support of the Copernicus Climate Change Service CS3. This is an opportunity to be involved with specific scientific developments related to the creation of fundamental climate data records for atmospheric sounding instruments measuring in the infrared and microwave spectrum. This will include the development and application of novel quality control methods for metadata and raw data, the development and validation of instrument corrections and calibration methods plus the derivation and of uncertainty estimates for Level 1 data products. The work also requires the compilation of relevant reports describing the developed methodology, its validation and application. Alongside a university degree in Meteorology, Remote Sensing or equivalent you will need to demonstrate in depth knowledge and experience in the calibration of infrared andor microwave instruments flown on meteorological satellites or similar missions. You will also have experience of scientific developments for instrument corrections, vicarious calibration and validation of satellite products and the ability to undertake programming using CC andor Fortran 95 as well as scripting languages such as Perl, Python and Shell. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. We offer attractive employment conditions, with a competitive salary, comprehensive health and social welfare provision, and extensive relocation assistance, if applicable. Have a look at our website to find out more. EUMETSAT is committed to providing an equal opportunities work environment for men and women and is seeking to recruit nationals from its Member States. Please see our website for further details.
What Can Farmers Do About Climate Change? Weed Control and Herbicides
2018-05-21 23:33:23| National Farmers Union
By Janan Lenzy, NFU Intern Previously on the Climate Column, we have discussed how troublesome weeds can be for agricultural operations, particularly as the climate continues to change. Although tillage can be an effective method of weed control, there are substantial drawbacks that may dissuade some farmers from implementation. One possible alternative to tillage is […]

Internal Research Fellow PostDoc on Exploiting Earth Observation for Climate Research
2018-05-15 11:26:46| Space-careers.com Jobs RSS
Research Fellowship Opportunity in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. Applications from women are encouraged. Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc on Exploiting Earth Observation for Climate Research This post is classified F2. Location ECSAT, Harwell, United Kingdom Our team and mission The overall goal of the ESA Climate Office is to expand awareness, use and scientific impact of Earth Observation EO data records, especially from ESA satellites, by working with the international climate research and modelling communities. This is achieved through the following lines of activities Implementation of the Climate Change Initiative programme CCIcci.esa.int, that aims to develop a lasting and structured dialogue with climate research and modelling communities worldwide, analysing their needs for longterm satellitebased observations of the climate system, as expressed via the Global Climate Observing System GCOS, and assessing their feedback on available EO data records Translating these needs into technical performance specifications for Fundamental Climate Data Records FCDR and Essential Climate Variables ECV based on the complete ESA EO satellite archives, taking due care to account for the nature of different satellites Initiating and managing a suite of scientific analyses, data exploitation and system development activities to enhance ESAs capability to generate these records for climate research, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trend assessment, and data assimilation, as well as validation of the data sets with the corresponding scientific users. Exploiting the records generated through CCI to improve understanding of key science questions e.g. those identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC Working Group 1 Assessment Report AR5, 2013 and those identified through the GCOS Implementation Plan GCOS200. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ESA website www.esa.int Fields of activitiesresearch In the framework of the above the selected candidate could choose to be involved in various activities depending on their previous research experience. For this opportunity, the suggested topics for potential research fellows are Developing activities common to a subset of climate projects, climate domains Atmospheric, Land and Ocean and their interfaces. Working with products from the various projects within the CCI portfolio see cci.esa.int focusing in particular on addressing key climate science questions e.g. those posed by IPCC. This should concentrate on a combination of ECVs delivered by established and new CCI projects. Working to support cross cutting activities such as data harmonisation, product consistency assessment, uncertainty characterisation. This can involve both CCI products and those outside ESA. Working on the derivation of Climate Indicators, as identified by GCOS, and their development and promotion for an informed general public. We encourage a wide range of proposals and can be reasonably flexible in what subjects can be covered. However, preference will be given to work involving ECVs delivered by projects managed directly by the ESA Climate Office1. 1 Aerosol, Cloud, Sea Ice, Soil Moisture, Fire, Glaciers, Land Surface Temperature, Lakes, Snow, Water Vapour Technical competencies Knowledge relevant to the field of research Researchpublication record Ability to conduct research autonomously Breadth of exposure coming from past andor current researchactivities Interest in space and space research Ability to gather and share relevant information Behavioural competencies Innovation Creativity Continuous Learning Communication Relationship Management Self Motivation Problem Solving CrossCultural Sensitivity Education Applicants should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in a related technical or scientific discipline. In particular for this position, Applicants should be early career researchers and must have completed their PhD or equivalent studies in a subject relevant to the work done by the ESA Climate Office, i.e. climatology, meteorology, hydrology or environmental sciences. Additional requirements Familiarity with andor experience in one or more of the following subjects is preferable climate science in relation to satellitebased Earth Observation, handling large data volumes preferably those derived from satellite sensors. data harmonisation, visualisation, model intercomparison or data assimilation Applicants should have good analytical and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment in a fairly autonomous manner. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Other information For behavioural competencies expected from ESA staff in general, please refer to the ESA Competency Framework. The Agency may require applicants to undergo selection tests. The closing date for applications is 11 June 2018. In addition to your CV and your motivation letter, please add your proposal of no more than 5 pages outlining your proposed research in the additional documents field of the application information section. Candidates are asked to arrange for 3 reference letters, to be sent by the referees themselves, before the closing date to temp.htresa.int. Please ensure your name is mentioned in the subject of the email. If you require support with your application due to a disability, please email contact.human.resourcesesa.int.
