Emission admission: New Zealand to fail carbon target
2013-11-04 11:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: Talk about a wrong turn. New Zealand's carbon emissions are set to be three times as high as its target, despite the country having an emissions trading scheme. The government wants to cut emissions to half of 1990 levels by 2050. But projections it released last week show that they are likely to be 50 per cent higher than 1990 levels by 2040. The Emissions Trading Scheme has a low carbon price of NZ$3.70 (US$3) a tonne, but under the Kyoto protocol companies can buy cheaper carbon credits...

Forest people can gather carbon data
2013-11-04 10:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News Network: You don`t have to be a sophisticated scientist equipped with all the latest gizmos in order to work out just how effective a particular forest is as a carbon sink, a critical way of soaking up greenhouse gases The job, researchers believe, can be done just as accurately by the people who live in the forests, most of whom probably have neither modern instruments nor scientific training. And the forests themselves will probably gain as well, because the local people will have more reason to feel...

World risks exceeding carbon budget, worsening climate
2013-11-03 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: The world risks blowing through its carbon budget in 21 years, threatening to cause global warming of more than double the threshold deemed safe by the United Nations, the global accounting firm PwC said today in a study. The budget is the amount of greenhouse gases the world can emit by 2100 to cap the temperature rise at 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). CO2 emitted per unit of economic output fell at 0.7 percent per year from 2007 through 2012, less than an eighth of the required...

Transition to a low carbon economy fails to pick up pace, report finds
2013-11-02 01:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Are we too late for two degrees? This was the question posed by last year's PwC report on the carbon intensity of the G20. This year, that question looks hard to justify. Our analysis, the Low Carbon Economy Index (LCEI) 2013, considers how efficient the global economy will need to be given expected GDP growth and a limited carbon budget. We look at the carbon intensity of the G20 economies the amount of carbon emitted for every million dollars of GDP and the rate we are using the two degrees...
