New York investigates radioactive leak groundwater near city
2016-02-07 00:24:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: Radioactive material has leaked into the groundwater below a nuclear power plant north of New York City, prompting a state investigation on Saturday and condemnation from governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo ordered an investigation into alarming levels of radioactivity found at three monitoring wells at the Indian Point energy center in Buchanan, New York, about 40 miles north of Manhattan. Our first concern is for the health and safety of the residents close to the facility and ensuring the groundwater...

Shallow groundwater poses pollution problem for Africa
2016-01-11 08:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
SciDev: The groundwater in many of Africa's most crowded regions lies close to the surface, making it vulnerable to pollution, a study shows. Regions along the Gulf of Guinea are at highest risk of groundwater pollution on the continent, according to a map drawn by researchers at the Université Catholique de Louvain's Earth and Life Institute in Belgium. Much of Central Africa and some coastal lands in northwest Africa are also vulnerable, the map shows. The study, to be published in next month's issue...

Tropical groundwater resources resilient to climate change
2015-12-11 13:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] Tropical groundwater may prove to be a climate-resilient source of freshwater in the tropics as intense rainfall favours the replenishment of these resources, according to a new study published in Environmental Research Letters. As climate observations show that global warming leads to fewer but more intense rainfalls, a clearer understanding of how these sources are replenished is crucial for developing strategies for groundwater usage that are better adapted to …
