Nucor warns of first-quarter miss due to imports

Nucor Corp. warned Thursday that it would post lower-than-expected earnings for the first quarter, pointing to higher import numbers pressuring margins and low steel prices. The North Carolina-based steel company now expects per-share earnings in the range of 10 cents to 15 cents a share, down from 35 cents in the year-earlier period.

As shipments fell from six of the top-ten supplier countries, it was those further down the ranking - Honduras and El Salvador - that recorded stand-out performances during the month.

An outbreak of avian flu at a western Minnesota farm poses a big threat to the state's turkey industry, and about 40 countries have already banned imports of the bird from Minnesota. The highly pathogenic H5N2 strain of aviation influenza wiped out a flock of about 15,000 birds in Pope County.
