Google's Android One phones to target emerging markets
2014-06-25 19:26:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google has announced plans to work with manufacturers to develop low-cost, entry-level smartphones running the Android OS. The Android One project will target emerging markets and launch the first devices in India. Google said it will offer a set of hardware reference boards, so OEMs merely need to pick the components from their suppliers of choice and loy out their preferred configuration. The phones will offer the same stock Android software found on Nexus and Google Play edition devices, but with virtual pre-install folders for OEM and carrier partners. The first ones will have 4.5-inch screens, dual SIM, FM radio and SD card support. They will be available first in India in Q3 from local manufacturers Karbonn, MicroMax and Spice, then roll out to a number of other emerging markets soon after.

Google's device will carry another company's brand, but will be powered by Google's new Android TV software designed to play movies, games and other content on TVs. Users will be able to control the box using Android smartphones or tablets, and potentially other devices. The new TV platform is expected to include a focus on video games, including support for games that work seamlessly between mobile devices and TVs and split-screen services.

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has unveiled another phone in the Nokia X range of devices supporting Android apps. The Nokia X2 will launch in July, initially as a dual-Sim phone, for a recommended price of EUR 99. Targeting first-time and emerging market smartphone users, the X2 comes with a 4.3-inch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 1 GB RAM, a 5 megapixel rear camera and a range of Microsoft and third-party apps, including OneNote, Yammer, Line games, WeChat and Instagram. A pull-down notifications tab supports management of connectivity options and actionable items, such as software updates. The Nokia X2 features exchangeable back covers that come with a brightly colored core and a translucent outer layer, so the device appears lit from within.
