Unifor serves strike notice on CP Rail

The union representing safety and maintenance workers at Canadian Pacific Railway said its members from across the country could be off the job by the weekend if negotiations on a new contract fail. The 1,800 safety and maintenance workers are represented by Unifor while the 3,300 locomotive engineers, conductors, trainmen and yardmen from across Canada are represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail conference union.

Environmentalists oppose DNR's approval of crude oil rail line through La Crosse wetlands

Midwest Environmental Advocates is raising concerns over the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approval of a permit for Burlington Northern Santa Fe to fill a wetland in the La Crosse River Marsh in order to expand a rail line carrying crude oil through the marsh and the urban area near the Upper Mississippi River. MEA said the DNR decision is another example of how the process for approving controversial and potentially catastrophic projects, such as the expansion of a rail line for trains carrying crude oil through Wisconsin, did not allow meaningful public input.
Producers on edge over possible strike by CP Rail conductors and engineers

TORONTO - Companies that depend on the railway to haul their goods to market are bracing for a possible strike at Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. A strike could hobble much of the Canadian manufacturing, retail and commodities sectors, which are served by two major rail carriers but often cannot choose between them. CP said its managers have been trained to run locomotives, but not all the freight will get moved if crews walk off the job.
