Entitled Development of Rail Freight in Europe: What Regulation Can and Cannot Do, CERRE's studies focus on three sets of issues: structural factors affecting demand, organisational challenges faced by rail operating companies and their responses, and challenges for rail freight regulation.

U.S. railroads expect to boost spending to $29 billion this year to lay track, add engines and otherwise upgrade a national network tested by a surge in energy and agriculture deliveries, the leading industry trade group said on Monday. The business of manufacturing and shipping crude oil carriers for railways is suffering as U.S. oil production begins to slow and global oil imports become an affordable alternative once again, according to a report from Reuters. The rates to lease oil cars have dropped from a year-ago high of $2,450 per month to $1,300 late last month.
