US firms seek data breach immunity in EU courts - report

(Telecompaper) The US government is trying to gain immunity for online security breaches by major US companies operating in the EU in negotiations for the Trade in Services Agreement (Tisa) in Geneva, according to leaked documents seen by the Guardian. Such an agreement would prevent US firms operating in the EU from being prosecuted for data breaches or claims of negligence in host countries, forcing EU governments to pursue cases through EU courts. According to public service unions, the leaked documents reveal how the US plans to protect US businesses from regulations that could hinder their entry into sensitive areas such as healthcare and government data handling. Former EU commissioner and Christian Democrat MEP Viviane Reding wrote on Twitter that she would oppose any provision undermining the right to privacy.
