Hormel Foods Corp. agreed to buy Applegate Farms LLC for about $775 million, a move that would give the maker of Spam a foothold in the organic-meats category. paid $7.7 billion for Hillshire Brands Co., which makes Jimmy Dean sausages, and Post Holdings Inc. bought egg and dairy-goods company Michael Foods Group Inc. AMSA honors Brenda Dismore with 2015 AMSA Meat Processing Award

The American Meat Science Association announced that Brenda Dismore is the recipient of the 2015 AMSA Meat Processing Award. The award, established in 1977, is sponsored by Smithfield Foods, Inc. Brenda Dismore will be honored at a special reception and awards banquet at the AMSA 68th Reciprocal Meat Conference on Tuesday, June 15, 2015 in Lincoln, NE.

Meat packer fined for mishandling slaughterhouse wastewater

The Register-Guard reports the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a $30,147 fine earlier this month to Bartels Packing. Bartels stores wastewater from the slaughterhouse in two onsite lagoons and then sprays the water onto its adjacent pastureland.

Test finds reported shard found in East Bay Grocery Outlet meat was salt, not glass

Results of a lab test reveal that a recent scare over what was believed to be a shard of glass found in Grocery Outlet meat was all for nothing. The shard was actually salt, not glass, according to a lab team from a third-party organization that studied the particles, which were discovered by a Grocery Outlet customer.
