Exclusive: More unit IPOs an option for evolving GlaxoSmithKline

GlaxoSmithKline could consider more partial public share offerings for component units as it evolves in the coming years, potentially pointing to a break-up of the group if this offers value to shareholders. Chief Executive Andrew Witty told Reuters the group's large consumer health business would be more viable as a standalone operation following the conclusion of a $20 billion asset swap with Novartis NOVN.VX, especially if it bought additional assets.

Last year was a huge year for venture-backed initial public offerings, with biotech leading the way nationally and in Seattle. The money flowing to venture-backed initial public offerings last year made 2014 the best year for new listings since 2000, according to a report by Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association.

Biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies enjoyed a banner year in 2014, with initial public offerings hitting their highest point of the millennium. Data provided by Ipreo, a market intelligence firm, shows that there were more IPOs from biotech and biopharmaceutical companies in 2014 than in the previous three years combined, both in the United States and from Silicon Valley.

In the weeks since the folks at Renaissance Capital told me the window was closing for biotech IPOs , there has been a smattering of offerings on the West Coast, but none in Massachusetts since Proteon Therapeutics' Oct. 22 stock sale. Proteon was the state's 16th biotech to go public this year.
