Vivendi not interested in buying Mediaset TV - Berlusconi

(Telecompaper) Vivendi has discussed a content sharing deal with Mediaset but is not interested in acquiring the company's TV operations, according to former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose family controls Mediaset. Berlusconi was responding on Italian radio to a report claiming the two companies had agreed a share-swap deal involving Mediaset's TV business, according to the Financial Times. The French company was reported on 10 March to be close to acquiring the Mediaset Premium pay-TV unit of in a cash and shares deal. Mediaset owns an 89 percent stake in the unit and the remaining 11 percent is held by Telefonica, which acquired it in 2014 for EUR 100 million. The same report suggested Vivendi and Mediaset are looking to create a European content production and delivery joint venture that would rival Sky.

Vivendi increases Telecom Italia stake to 24.9%

(Telecompaper) French media conglomerate Vivendi has increased its stake in Telecom Italia to 24.9 percent after acquiring just over 1 percent of the operator's ordinary share capital between 01 and 09 March, according to an SEC filing. In total, Vivendi spent EUR 145.3 million to purchase the shares, said a separate Telecom Italia filing. The French company's holding is now just under the 25 percent threshold that triggers a mandatory takeover offer under Italian market rules. However, unnamed sources cited by Reuters said the company is not expected to acquire any more shares and launch a takeover, at least in the short term.

(Telecompaper) French media giant Vivendi is close to acquiring a majority stake in the Mediaset Premium pay-TV unit of Italian broadcaster Mediaset, according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters. Vivendi is looking to buy Mediaset's entire 89 percent stake in the unit, for which it would pay half in cash and half in shares, said one of the sources, adding that the talks are being led directly by Mediaset CEO Pier Silvio Berlusconi. "Pier Silvio is determined to sell and a deal could be signed shortly," said the source. The remaining 11 percent in Mediaset Premium is held by Telefonica, which acquired it in 2014 for EUR 100 million.

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia CEO Marco Patuano has held a meeting with Vivendi executives in Paris to discuss strategy issues amid signs that the French media group is reviewing his position, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. Patuano's term as CEO is due to end in a year and Vivendi is said to be losing patience with his leadership after investing some EUR 3.5 billion to increase its stake in the Italian operator to 23.8 percent. The sources said the executives discussed issues such as cutting costs, revamping Telecom Italia's domestic business as well as options for Brazilian unit Tim Participacoes.
