Paris climate deal paves way further science
2015-12-14 15:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
SciDevNet: A deal to reduce global emissions and help the world adapt to climate change was signed in Paris on 12 December -- with earlier concerns that science would be ignored allayed by new promises. The agreement, signed by 195 countries, states the "aim to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible'. Nations will cut their emissions "rapidly' and "in accordance with best available science' to reach a "balance' between manmade emissions and carbon removals from the atmosphere...

Paris agreement a victory for climate science and ultimate defeat for fossil fuels
2015-12-12 21:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: The right hand of French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius gripped the gavel in the seconds before striking the historic first global deal on climate change. Dignitaries, politicians and delegates had filed into the packed La Seine plenary room from about 5.30pm here in Paris. But there was still time for some last minute drama. It turned out that a paragraph that contained the word shall should have read should, but the delay was enough to create tension across the venue. But this is...

The troubling science thats pushing the world toward a much tougher climate goal
2015-12-11 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: Perhaps the most surprising story out of the Paris climate talks so far is the shift that seems to be occurring in favor of at least some acknowledgment -- if not an outright embrace -- of a 1.5 degrees Celsius global temperature target in a final agreement here. Holding warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels -- rather than to 2 degrees, which up until now has been the most widely accepted target would be extraordinarily difficult, if not outright impossible. Scientists have...
