Rush-hour service on the Montauk LIRR branch has been suspended in both directions after a train hit and killed a person Friday in Great River, authorities said. A pedestrian on the tracks was struck just before 5 p.m. by a westbound Long Island Rail Road train that was not in service, said Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

A man lying on New Jersey Transit tracks was fatally struck by a westbound commuter train during the evening rush hour on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the rail line said. There were no injuries among the passengers or crew on the four-car Pascack Valley Line train, which was traveling from Hoboken toward its terminal destination in Spring Valley, N.Y., when it hit the man on the track near Central Avenue.
