EE set to announce STB-based TV service
2014-10-08 09:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) UK mobile operator EE will announce plans to launch a TV service on 9 October, writes the Financial Times. The operator will offer TV alongside home broadband and mobile to address the quad play market, already targeted by BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. EE is expected to offer Freeview channels alongside pay content on demand from various media groups. The TV service is likely to be made available on mobile and tablets as EE keeps to its mobile roots. EE would not comment on the matter ahead of its announcement. Separately, the Telegraph reports that the STB will be provided by Netgem, which supplies EE's 50 percent shareholder Orange. Sources told the newspaper that EE's box will offer Freeview channels via broadcast, and catch-up and on-demand services over the internet. BBC iPlayer and Demand 5 are expected to be available at launch, but not BskyB's Now TV or BT Sport channels. The Telegraph writes that the TV service is expected to be free with the EE broadband service and cost GBP 9.95 a month for mobile-only subscribers.

BSkyB to produce more international TV shows
2014-10-07 14:42:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) British viewers will see immediate benefits of BSkyB's takeover of 100 percent of Sky Italia and 57 percent of Sky Deutschland from 21st Century Fox, CEO Jeremy told the Independent. He said one of his top priorities will be to produce more international TV shows, such as Sky Italia's Gomorrah, which is screened on Sky Atlantic in the UK. Another aspect of the merger will be to use BSkyB's larger size to negotiate pan-European rights against rivals like Netflix. Over 95 percent of BSkyBs independent shareholders voted in favour of the deal on 6 October, while 21st Century Fox abstained.
