Sony develops tech for 185TB tapes: 3,700 times more storage than a Blu-ray disc
2014-04-30 17:26:25| Extremetech
Once upon a time, the best way for you to back up the entirety of your computer's data was to use the medium that was once the best way to listen to music: magnetic tape. Writeable optical media, cheap hard drives, and cloud storage eventually became the consumer norm, but tape drives still hung around as one of the best options for mass data backup. Sony has developed a new technology that pushes tape drives far beyond where they once were, leading to individual tapes with 185TB of storage capacity.
MOSFET Driver extends run times of battery-powered products.

Designed to address wide variety of applications including motor drives, UPS, and DC/AC inverters, 85 V MIC4605 Half-Bridge MOSFET Driver features adaptive-dead-time circuitry, which actively monitors half bridge to minimize time between high and low side MOSFET transitions. Anti-shoot-through circuitry prevents erroneous inputs and noise from turning both MOSFETs on at same time. Applications include fans, power tools, remote control toys and drones, appliances, and E-bikes. This story is related to the following:MOSFET Drivers

Maintaining Markets in Uncharted Times
2014-04-16 15:36:00| National Hog Farmer
By Mark Greenwood, senior vice president, relationship management, AgStar Financial Services ACA We are in an unprecedented time in the swine industry. I am writing this on March 13, and cutout values recently hit $120, which I believe is an all-time record. We have the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) that is raising havoc across the industry. These recent events mean, from an economic perspective, producers will make more money, on average in 2014, with lower production. read more

Fracking methane leaks at least 100 times larger than EPA estimated, say researchers
2014-04-16 10:10:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: Gas methane emissions from some shale gas wells in the eastern US could be orders of magnitude larger than the EPA has estimated, according to a report released this week. In a paper entitled Toward a better understanding and quantification of methane emissions from shale gas development, scientists suggest that gas pads in southwestern Pennsylvania were releasing methane at a rate between 100 and 1,000 times greater than the EPA had suggested. "Large emissions averaging 34 g CH4/s per well...

Purdue and Cornell Researchers Reveal Up to 1,000 Times More Methane Emissions Than Estimated
2014-04-15 17:24:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: Because natural gas has less carbon than dirty coal, gas producers and even the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have applauded it as a cleaner alternative. Hopefully, a joint study from researchers at two universities will change that. Purdue and Cornell universities on Monday released a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America with data on higher-than-expected methane levels found above shale gas wells. The researchers...
