A Flint-area man is facing federal charges after authorities claimed he used local car dealerships to organize a bank fraud scheme. Edward Frank Usewick III pleaded not guilty Nov. 19 in Flint U.S. District Court after he was arraigned on bank fraud and conspiracy charges following the unsealing of a 20-count federal indictment.

At auction, values for the 500,000 or so affected cars in the United States fell between 8 percent and 14.5 percent after the Volkswagen announcement in mid-September, according to new data from Kelley Blue Book.

Some used-car dealers are trying to get around the extended warranty terms stipulated under the year-old Revised Motor Vehicle Import Policy by striking side deals with customers who are being asked to accept a shorter coverage period. Portfolio minister Anthony Hylton was unaware of the practice when Sunday Business approached him last week for comment but said the gambit is unlikely to survive for long as such agreements would become null and void as soon as the motor policy has the weight of the law behind it.
