Factors including volatile oil prices and a loophole allowing shippers to keep running older cars could leave rail car makers like Trinity Industries Inc and Greenbrier Co with a capacity glut, once initial orders for cars that comply with tougher safety rules are filled, analysts and industry officials said.

Weak car sales point to financial strain

THERE are early signs that financial pressure on households and deteriorating consumer confidence, caused by a lacklustre economic outlook, have started to bite into new passenger car sales growth. Figures released yesterday revealed that new car sales fell last month by 5.4 percent to 31 201 units from the 32 974 new cars sold in May last year.
