Indias first Mars satellite enters orbit, costing just 11% of NASAs own Mars mission
2014-09-24 13:40:50| Extremetech
India's Mars orbiter, Mangalyaan, has successfully inserted itself into Mars orbit. India becomes only the fourth space agency to successfully make it into Mars orbit, behind the Soviets, NASA, and the ESA. Remarkably, the entirety of India's Mangalyaan mission cost just 4.5 billion rupees -- or about $74 million. Compare this to NASA's own MAVEN Mars orbiter, which has a total mission cost of around $672 million. This was also India's first attempt to reach Mars orbit -- historically, only Europe's ESA made it to Mars on its first attempt.

Insights To Guide Creation Of Robotic Satellite-Servicing Capabilities In Geostationary Earth Orbit
2014-09-05 08:03:09| rfglobalnet News Articles
An increasing number of expensive, mission-critical satellites are launched every year into geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), approximately 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the Earth. Unlike objects in low Earth orbit (LEO), such as the Hubble Space Telescope, satellites in GEO are essentially unreachable with current technology.

Galileo satellites launched into wrong orbit - Arianespace
2014-08-25 09:26:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Arianespace has confirmed that two satellites intended to form part of the Galileo constellation, the EU's flagship satellite navigation system, have been launched into the wrong orbit. The satellites were launched aboard a Soyuz rocket that blasted off from French Guiana on 22 August. Although the liftoff and first part of the mission proceeded "nominally", according to Arianespace, they ended up in off-target orbits. "While it is too early to determine the exact causes, we would like to offer our sincere excuses to the European Space Agency and the European Commission for this orbital injection that did not meet expectations," said Arianespace chairman and CEO Stephane Israel. The European Commission said it was closely monitoring the situation and had requested the launch of an inquiry "to clarify the circumstances and the potential implications for the mission."
