Today's (23 May) full-year results from Marks & Spencer have once again emphasised the company's reliance on its food business, as the UK retail group posted a 1.4% fall in clothing and home sales a day after announcing plans to shutter more than 100 stores before 2022. While CEO Steve Rowe is optimistic the group's turnaround efforts are off to a good start, with claims the new organisation will largely be in place by July, will its investments - and indeed its store closures - be enough to revive the retailer's clothing fortunes?

Clothing down but US retail sales still up in April

Sales at clothing and clothing accessory stores were down 0.4% year-over-year but up 1.4% from March seasonally adjusted, while sporting goods stores slipped 3.8% year-over-year and down 0.1% from March seasonally adjusted.
