Liberty Global raises stake in Ziggo to 15%

2013-04-30 12:42:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Liberty Global has increased its stake in Dutch cable operator Ziggo to 15.0 percent, according to a filing with the Dutch securities regulator AFM. Liberty Global first acquired a 12.65 percent stake in Ziggo at the end of March, after Ziggo's shareholders placed a large stake on the market and Barclays was unable to find investors for the shares. The shareholders Cinven and Wrburg Pincus sold the week prior to Liberty's latest announcement their remaining shares in Ziggo, in a discounted one-day offering. Liberty Global, which already owns the second-largest cable operator in the Netherlands UPC, said it considers the Ziggo stake a strategic investment.

Ziggo starts nationwide roll-out of Wi-Fi network

2013-04-25 16:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Dutch cable operator Ziggo has begun its national deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots by rolling out 65,000 in The Hague. The operator said internet customers in the areas where it operates will have access to almost 1 million Ziggo Wi-fiSpots by the end of August, based on shared access to customers' home broadband modems. Following the test city of Groningen, the Hague will be the second location to go live, with all the hotspots active by 7 May. According to the plans, the operator will roll out 200,000 hotspots in South-Holland and Groningen, and 200,000 in Utrecht and North Holland by end June, as well as 150,000 Brabant and 200,000 in Limburg and Twente by end July. By end August, 100,000 will be installed in Friesland, Drenthe and Overijssel. Ziggo said the numbers were based on the Ziggo Wi-Fi modems installed as of 31 March. The number of modems, and therefore the number of hotspots, are expected to pass 1 million by September. Ziggo said it has adapted its equipment and programmes so that there will be a total separation between the WifiSpot and the client network; Wi-Fi use by clients does not affect their internet performance; and that the WifiSpot has enough range to support 20 guest users simultaneously with the necessary freedom of movement. Ziggo tested the system in Groningen, saying that almost all clients found it to be an excellent alternative to 3G. Less than 1 percent of the clients turned off the hotspot function and did not wish to participate, Ziggo said.

Ziggo to address churn as Q1 sales growth slows to 0.2%

2013-04-17 09:23:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ziggo reported first quarter revenues up 0.2 percent from the year before to EUR 387.8 million, despite a 5.8 percent decline in telephony revenues. The consumer market contracted (-0.6%), while the business market continued to grow (+11.7%). CEO Bernard Dijkhuizen said churn remains high. Ziggo will therefore initiate new loyalty campaigns in Q2, with a strong focus on customer retention. Adjusted EBITDA lifted 3.0 percent to EUR 222.6 million, with the EBITDA margin up slightly to 57.4 percent, while the net profit increased to EUR 92.6 million, or EUR 0.46 per share, from a loss of 14.5 million or EUR 0.07 per share a year ago. The net cash flow was up 8.3 percent to EUR 160.1 million. The number of All-in-1 bundle subscribers rose by 31,000 in the quarter, up 2.2 percent from Q4 and 8.3 percent year-on-year. All-in-1 bundle penetration reached 52.2 percent of Ziggo's consumer customer base. The cable operator added 24,000 internet subscribers, the number of digital subscribers went up by 4,000 to 2.260 million, and it added 33,000 telephony customers for a total 1.525 million at end-March. Ziggo reiterated its guidance for 2013 EBITDA up 2.5-3.5 percent, but cut the revenue outlook, saying it now expects revenue growth, excluding 'other revenues', at the low end of EBITDA growth. It previously expected revenues to grow slightly faster than EBITDA. The company expects improved revenue momentum over the course of the year as marketing and retention initiatives take effect.
